An Easy Guide to ETA Applications

Applying for UK visas to study English abroad can be a very confusing process and so can applying for an ETA (electronic travel authorisation).

What is the ETA?

A UK ETA is a travel authorisation that all non-visa holding visitors must apply for before travelling to the UK for a short term stay. The policy was introduced in 2023 with the aim of streamlining the process for potential visitors whilst also enhancing UK border security.

From Wednesday 2nd April 2025, you need to have an ETA which allows multiple visits to the UK for up to six months. Your ETA lasts for two years or until your passport expires. It can be for either of the following reasons: tourism, visiting family and friends, business or short-term study. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to apply for ETA.

Firstly, you need to check whether you are eligible to apply for an ETA. More information can be found at the following link: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/check-when-you-can-get-an-electronic-travel-authorisation-eta  The quickest way to apply for an ETA is through downloading the UK ETA app on a mobile device.

Downloading the UK ETA app

Before downloading the app, you need your original passport, an email address and a way to pay e.g. a debit card or Apple Pay.

For Apple users, you will need an iPhone 7 or newer and to have iOS 16 or later installed on your phone. The app can be downloaded here: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/uk-eta/id6444912481

For Android users, you will need Android 12 or later and to have a minimum of 165MB of storage space. The app can be downloaded here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=uk.gov.HomeOffice.ho3

The app will need to access your mobile device’s camera so please make sure that you have given permission for the app to have access.

Taking a photograph of your passport

Take a picture of your passport’s photo page by using your mobile device’s camera. Make sure the camera is focused on the text so it does not look blurry and it is clear. A text box will appear at the top of your screen which will ask you to adjust your phone in order to capture your passport correctly. The app will then read your passport details from the photo of your passport. Ensure that you check these details carefully and that they match.

Scanning your face and taking a picture of yourself

Hold your phone in front of your face using the camera and wait until the scanning is complete. For any child up to the age of nine, they will not be asked to scan their face. Once scanned, you will be prompted to take a photograph of yourself. You must keep your head straight and look directly at the camera, include your head and shoulders, maintain a neutral expression and be in even lighting with a plain, light-coloured background. You are not allowed to wear a head covering unless you are exempt due to religious or medical reasons. You must not have any shadows, objects or people behind you. You will have a chance to retake the photo before submission.

Completing the application

You will be asked questions about your address, job status, criminal history or other nationalities if they apply to you. If you are under 18 or the person you are applying for is under 18, you need to provide contact details for a guardian or parent. After you have answered the questions, you need to pay £10 (12€) in the app. A confirmation email will be sent saying that the application has been submitted.

Final ETA decision

An email will be sent to you notifying you of the outcome of your ETA application. A decision will usually be made within three working days but please bear in mind that it may take longer than three working days. The app can be deleted when you finish applying. The ETA will be linked to your passport digitally, so there is no need to show a physical document. However, please note that having an ETA does not guarantee you entry. You may still be obligated to speak to a Border Force officer or to use an ePassport gate if you are eligible.
