An interview with Martin, our Finance and Administration Manager

For how long have you worked for Hilderstone College?

For 10 years, from 1995 to 2005, then I left for some years and then I came back in 2016.

What did you do from 2005 to 2016?

I was a business manager in a local secondary school and a Finance and Estates Manager at Sure Start, a local community child centre.

What is your role in the school?

I deal with all the financial aspects: I’m the Finance and Administration Manager, a member of the management team and clerk to the governing body. I also look after the school estate.

What was it about Hilderstone College that made you choose to work here?

I like the people and the staff who work with me – there is a good working atmosphere. I enjoy meeting and talking with the students and I also like to get involved with all areas of the college environment.

You play football with the school team, right? Do you do any other sports?

Yes, I used to play squash, badminton, tennis, golf.  I am a member of the walking football team and also a member of a local gym and a treasurer of the cricket team.

Do you have other interests outside work?

Yes, I enjoy reading and cycling – but not at the same time!

Which kind of food do you suggest to someone that has just arrived in England?

I really like Thai food; there are several good Thai restaurants in Broadstairs. I also like to eat in the ‘Toby Carvery’, which is a traditional roast dinner place near the local shopping centre, and the seafood restaurant near Broadstairs pier. Another of my favourites is the local curry house, it’s good quality food. In fact, I’m an active member of a monthly curry club.

Are there some places that you would like to recommend that are not in the school programme?

Well, you can try the walking football. It’s not as energetic as normal football!
You could visit the zoo or try go-karting in Canterbury, but in fact the school social programme is very extensive and covers a full range of activities and excursions.
